The presentation “Coin circulation and its impact on cash
cycle efficiency: the Euro Area perspective” will focus on the efficiency and
effectiveness of the coin circulation in the Euro Area at large.
The recent payment trends across the board show a clear shift of customer
preferences to cashless and digital means of payments. However, the European
authorities have stated, that cash is there to stay, so it is all the more
important that the cash and its infrastructure can easily be used by the
public. To achieve that, the stakeholders must work together in an efficient
way.
The author will therefore examine the current key obstacles to making coin
circulation more efficient, in particular in the areas of coordination and
procurement. In addition, the author will examine the available possibilities
for further improvement of the cash cycle from the stakeholders’, customers’
and policy makers’ point of view, always remembering that ‘helicopter minting’
is neither a sustainable nor a practical solution towards the improvement of
cash cycle efficiency.
