To help establish its medium- and long-term coin strategy, Magyar Nemzeti Bank performed a representative household survey in 2018 about coin usage behavior, the general public’s attitude towards coins and their opinion on the current Hungarian Forint coin series. We present some of our more interesting results, including the differences between the use of low- and high-value coins, the banknote-coin boundary, and the preferred size and weight of coins. We also show how this information can be used to improve our coin series and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of changing the coins’ composition.
