Inefficient coin recirculation exists in most countries resulting in an artificial shortage of coin followed by new coin production to meet demand. In the United States in 2018, Coinstar’s 17,000 coin counting kiosks recirculated three times the number of coins that the US Mint produced. The net effect of recirculation saved millions in tax payer dollars. Coinstar’s international expansion is having a similar positive effect changing the landscape of coin recirculation in Europe and Asia. Large scale recirculation assists governments and financial institutions to redefine coin flow strategies for their markets.
