More and more news and advertising campaigns come up with misleading information about the use of cash, the cost of cash and above all, the impact of cash on the environment.

Considering these facts the MDWG (European Mint Directors Working Group) decided to team up with the ICA (International Currency Association) to get an all-embracing picture regarding the sustainability of cash and its digital payments counterpart.

In a unique Research Study which compares the sustainability of existing cash payments (banknotes and coins) and digital payments (debit and credit cards payments, mobile payments), this work will cover the large European EU27 area and its 450 Million population and propose an innovative and board approach with the Carbon Footprint report methodology.
