09:00 – 12:30 Designing an Efficient Cash Structure

This workshop is for national authorities (central banks and issuing authorities) and ICA members only.

Central banks and issuing authorities face increasing pressure to adjust their national cash structure – but sound decisions require facts, not assumptions. This workshop will explore the key concerns decision makers encounter when launching a new coin, a new banknote, or redesigning the denomination mix. We discuss which data central bankers rely on, what international best practice suggests regarding the number of coins, the ideal banknote range, and which purchasing power distribution supports efficient cash usage.

The session will highlight the societal benefits of modern cash structures and present global evidence that circulation coins continue to deliver value. Insights from the Cash Value Project – a scientific initiative from the International Currency Association (ICA) measuring the societal and economic value of cash across key dimensions – will provide an additional evidence base.

The workshop is a continuation of the series run at previous Coin Conferences for central banks by the International Mint Directors’ Technical Committee Customer Taskforce (which has now been merged into the ICA). It will be led by Dieter Merkle, formerly of ANDRITZ Schuler Pressen / ICA, supported by coin experts and ICA members. Speakers and topics include:

Bringing back Purchasing Power to Coins and Banknotes

Decentralised Cash Data Acquisition – the key to more sustainable cash management models
Mark Stevenson, Koenig & Bauer

These presentations will be followed by a series of working groups discussing the issues raised, and will conclude with a panel discussion led by Frane Maroević, General Director of the International Currency Association (ICA).

Workshop outcomes will contribute to the development of as set of easy-to-understand future guidelines for designing an optimal cash structure for the benefit of central bank decision makers at all management levels.

12:30 – 14:00 IACA Members’ Lunch Discussion (by invitation only)

This IACA Members Discussion Meeting will examine the factors that contribute to a healthy and resilient coin circulation system. Participants will explore how changing payment habits, distribution models, stakeholder behaviours, and operational challenges are affecting coin circulation in different markets. Drawing on central bank experiences, the session will consider approaches to improving circulation efficiency, strengthening stakeholder coordination, identifying areas of vulnerability, and ensuring that coin infrastructure remains capable of meeting public and commercial needs both today and as payment ecosystems continue to evolve. 14:00 – 17:30 Commemorative Coins and the International Market

Coins are not only ambassadors of their issuing country, but also a means of generating income. So it makes sense to sell them internationally. But building such an international market is not without its pitfalls, as there are numerous traps. In this workshop, Ursula Kampmann – well-known numismatist, journalist and founder of CoinsWeekly – will present and discuss some of these challenges and solutions and weigh the advantages of direct sales against the benefits of using agents or trading partners.

Number of trading partners per country
Special coins for special markets
PR and advertising to end customers
The secondary market

This workshop is aimed at central banks, issuing authorities, and mints, to provide ideas and inspiration on how to benefit from the huge potential of commemorative coins whilst avoiding or minimising the drawbacks.
